I was wondering how long you have to leave a male chinchilla and a female chinchilla together before the chinnie becomes pregnant? :-[ a friend was asking because she is looking to breed her girl without buying a boy, kinda like stud service.

I have one pair that have kits as soon as they get together and she goes in season the first time. :blush2:
I have another pair that have had only one kit in 7 years and have lived in the same cage all this time. ::)
And another pair that have never had kits and have lived in the same cage for 5 years. :::(((
Only mother nature knows! :D

;D Yes, they are all so different.
I was told changing partners might help with not producing females, but it didn't for one of mine. She's had 3 males and no kits.
Good breeders are pretty much like clock work, I put them together between 8-12 months,and they have 2 litters per year.
I have one pair that only has 1 litter per year.
My main standard female was with her standrad mate for 6 years. I thought I'd try her with a color as I get enough grey kits from the colors for the market here. I put her with a brown velvet over a year ago, and no more kits. Maybe she doesn't like him that way :D
I think they are just friends.

My Daisy was with Jack for about 3 years (they had several nice litters), when he passed away, I put another standard gray male (like Jack) in with her ... they have produced no kits. All I have ever seen them do is cuddle. She will not allow him to get close to her when she is in season. I will have to try a different male.
With Jack, he did not like other chins and he did not like people ... 3 breeders, that I know of, tried different females with him, he wanted nothing to do with them. I tried several females with him ... he ignored them or just fussed at them. When he was 4 or 5 years old, I put Daisy in with Jack, it was love at first sight! It was like turning a light on, he loved her and people instantly! I guess she knew how special their love was and I'll have to try to find another "just the right one" for her now. She's never been quite the same since Jack passed away. I want to see her happy again. ::nod::
Remember, chinchillas have the full range of emotions humans have and each has it's own special personality.

Funny little critters.
Funny that she keeps him away, there would have been no stopping her first mate, Pokie.
The br. velvet is a tad older and I guess not as adamant about doing the deed these days.
That's ok though, they make a nice pair and I really don't want/need to breed her.
I like that she's found someone to retire with, pokie just would not have that I'm sure. ;D
