General Chat / Little Buddy?
« on: January 07, 2012, 04:22:26 AM »
So, when I bought Mindy, I sadly had to take her away from her mate (Poor girl, but I couldn't get her previous owner to sell the boy too... I guess she was very attached to the boy.). She is pregnant and due for kits in a couple of weeks, but she still seems kind of lonely, and after her kits are old enough to be weaned, she will be lonely again. Right now, getting another chinchilla is out of the picture, so I was thinking about buying her a little stuffed animal to groom and love and keep her company. Couple questions though:

-What are acceptable materials (In case she decided to eat her little friend instead...) for her too chew?

-Has anyone else done this? Where are some places I can find acceptable plushies for a chinchilla (I was thinking the thrift store, and finding one).

-Is the stuffing in a stuffed animal bad for her? I was thinking about ripping out the stuffing and stuffing it with newspaper shreds or something safe.

-What is safe detergents to use to wash it?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. I try to play with her and keep her company as much as I can, but I can't be around all the time.

General Breeder Chat / Possible mommy chin?
« on: December 29, 2011, 08:39:30 PM »
So I am a first time Chinchilla owner, and I just bought my first chin last week. The woman I bought her from said she was around two years old. She also waited until AFTER I paid her the money to inform me that she has been housed with a male for the last three months, so there is a possibility she could be pregnant. But I fell in love with little Mindy the first time I saw her, so I am willing to learn what I need to know in order to make this first-time mommy experience as easy as possible. I will admit, I am a little worried because I have never had a chinchilla, let alone a pregnant one. But I have been doing nothing but constant research since I brought her home.

Any advice for a first time chin owner who may potentially have a first-time mommy?

General Chat / Is something wrong? D:
« on: December 29, 2011, 03:21:30 PM »
Hey guys, so I just got my first Chinchilla a couple days ago. I have been leaving her alone since I got her to let her settle in, only sitting outside the cage and cooing at her. But since she has been here, she has been really... mopey. She just sits in one corner, looking at the floor all day. I finally tried giving her a raisin yesterday, and she wouldn't eat it. She is eating her regular food and hay, but not very much. So I was just wondering if this is common in chinchillas adjusting to a new home, or is she depressed? Is there any way I can make her feel more comfortable? I don't like seeing her like this..

((Oh, and the woman I bought her from said she has been housed with a boy for the last three months, so there is a slight possibility she might be pregnant... Don't know is that helps or not.))
