General Chat / Messi Update :)
« on: March 05, 2015, 06:32:06 PM »
Well it's been a long recovery but Messi has been leavin her cage for the last two weeks now and setting up camp in her favourite hideaway over her cage.. She's a lot more active and using we dust bath again..

She still isn't eating hay :( I had hoped that she would she her teeth had been filled down but it just never happened .. I did buy new dandelion & marigold hay and I mix up some of the "petal" food with it in the hope that she might "accidentally" eat some hay while rooting for the petals but it's hard to tell if she does..

As I mentioned I have been keeping a large supply of petal food... Which contains , dandelion , rose petals, lavender, corn flowers, hibiscus, marrow flowers , just about every flower a chinchilla is allowed to eat.. She does still get a treat of only one raisin a day but I think I'm still only doing this out of paranoia as I'm trying to reassure myself she's still eating..

My only concern now is her chin is still discoloured. As she's a Wilson Chin it's very obvious and I'm worried it's fresh drool and not just the staining left behind from the initial drool.. Her chin is never wet to the touch and the stainin hasn't increased in size at all I'm at a loss as to how to clean it .. She likes me petting her but as soon as she realised I'm trying to clean up her chin she gets very narky with me..

How long does this discolouration stay  concidering she a Snow White girl??! It's obvious she can't clean her chin herself will it just disappear as the fur sheds naturally over a long period of time?

General Chat / Messi won't leave her cage...???
« on: February 02, 2015, 06:45:22 PM »
So Messi seems to be doing a lot better :) she is eatin now and I have made sure to get her very healthy treats like cornflower & summer field dried flowers ... Which she loves! She gets one raisin or piece of dried banana every second day now..

I'm buying some new hay for her in an attempt to get her to eat it regularly.. I think she is eating a little hay now cause I'm tricking her and mixing the flower petals in wih it and this new hay has dandelion & camomile mixed in so fingers crossed.. She has never liked hay to begin with not ever no matter what I tried or what brands.. But I think I can trick her  ::)

Anyway my only worry now is that she doesn't seem to be as active... She used to come out of her cage on a regular basis and she used to jump on all her perches ... He also had a favorite hiding place on a chair she used to get to by climbing up the outside of her cage.. But she's not doing any of that now. She has good energy and jumps from the floor of her cage to the first level (her bed and cooling stone) but that's it at the moment .. Could it be that he is suffering from side effects due to her very slow recovery from the GA 3 weeks ago ? Could there be permanent damage ... It has been colder than usual here would a drop in temp slow down her activity? I have been trying to keep her room temp at a constant 19 degree Celsius for the last day just incase she's too cold..

If she still isn't back to normal activity level in a few weeks will it be safe to say she has been permanently damaged :(

She seem pretty happy at the moment .. Greeting me at cage door ..which we leave open all the time now so she has full run of her room 24/7. ...

General Chat / New here.. Hello from Ireland :)
« on: January 19, 2015, 05:50:05 PM »
Just want to properly introduce myself :)

I posted early as I'm having a few issues with my Chin Chin Messi ... I think she may be improving :) unfortunately where I live in Ireland there aren't many vets used to seeing Chinchillas .. The closest vet that has knowlege on them is over an hour away and poor Messi just wouldn't be fit for that kind of trip. The vet I do have is a very caring and kind one and he try's his very best...

So Messi is 10 years plus ... We aren't exactly sure of her age because when we rescued her she was full matured and unbeknown to use pregnant at the time too.  Unfortunately she lost her pups but we have had her 8 years now and she loves spending time with the cats :)

Messi is a Wilson Chinchilla and in all my years I've never seen another one but I'm sure there are a few in Ireland .. Grey / violet chinchillas are all I've ever seen but I did once fun a black chinchilla and we though Messi would live the company.. Big mistake she almost killed the poor thing :( he was ok but we had to return him the the breeder straight away..

I rescue disabled cats so Messi always has company although we can't leave her out with them anymore as Messi plays to rough :) she does spend time with them safely in here cage or behind end the screened door..

Just wondering who else has a Wilson and how old is the oldest chinchilla belonged to a member ...
