Health / Re: mushy poop with pus

Sure I will keep you all updated!  I bumped into another vet and decided to ask him about the chinchillas, since he saw them before.  i explained everything that was going on, he said my chinny sounds good...and that I should not worry.  I just switched to a better quality hay yesterday, so I'll see what happens.   I took my chinnies to the bathroom yesterday to play, and the one that's having mushy poop was the most active out of all four!!  very adventrous, that one!

I just got back from the vet... the doctor said all 4 of my chinchillas (even the one with the mushy poop) has a little trace of giardia left....but he does not want to prescribe me medicine, because he believes they are free of giardia.  THe information he was trying to explain is vague... but he said something about giardia has an antibody inside, so since I just finished giving my chinnies the medicine... they are pooping out the antibody.  so he wants me to come back next month and have their stool checked, by then all the antibody should be cleared up.

about the one that has mushy poop, he believes that its the pellets or the hay that is causing the mushiness.. i told him about the pus, he said since I only saw one...it is okay.  if I see more than 3 of that kind, then that's when we should be concerned.

Eddiing – when I gave her the pellets after taking it away for a couple of days, her poop was less mushy than it was the first time.  I am using Mazuri

JoAnn – yes, I did read your website earlier about Giardia, my chinny got diagnosed with it…she just finished her medicine.  She has a vet appointment in few hours.   My chinny remains very active and she’s always roaming for food!  She lovessss hay so much.  When I put back the pellets after she got better, she went straight for the pellets too.  She does drink water too.   As of her poop, it is shiny.  I think it does seem to look like a raw egg white.

few days ago, one of my chinnies had a mushy poop, but she was verrry active!! I still decided to take away the pellets and made sure hay was always available... the next day and the day after that, her poop was better and no behavior change...  so on the 3rd day, i gave her pellets...and now since yesterday she's been having a mushy poop... but not that mushy comparing to before.. just now i found a brownish red looking pus on the ends of her poop (i only found one).  i tried looking on the website, but I can't find anything... anyone know what it is??

Health / wrong prescription for giardia?? urgent, please help!
« on: June 03, 2009, 10:35:39 AM »
I just took my chinnies to the vet, and the vet said they have giardia... the medicine is panacur, and i have to treat one tube each chinchilla (according to their weight) for three days... then repeat next month.  they wont test the stool till the second dose is over (which is next month).  i feel that this is wrong, since that its a short amount of time.   one of my chinchilla did get giardia when i first got her, it took me 2 weeks to finally clear it up.  what should i do?  go to other vet?  what? please help?

Health / ear infection or what??
« on: May 29, 2009, 04:11:16 PM »
When I first bought my two chinchillas, they both already had chapped/cracked ears...i thought it might be because of the fights they would have in the cage before I bought them.. since that the breeder kept many chinchillas in one small cage.  some areas in their ear are bitten off (just the tip of the ears).  I thought after rescuing them, their ears would get better... but it has been a couple of months that their ears are not improving.  In the back of the ear, it appears red in some areas, and i could see the blood vessels.  the ears are almost hairless.  I cannot compare the ears with my other two healthy chinchillas (I have 4 chinchillas) because they have hair around them.

I took them to the vet last week, the vet said its an ear infection...but it does not even match the symptoms of an ear infection.  both of them are not tilting their head, they are not losing balance, they do not have fluids coming out of their ears, they're not touching their ears.  Violet, one of the sick chinnies', nose or mouth was sore, because she would not stop scratching.  but after taking the medicine, the scab fell out and it isn't growing back like it did before, so that's good news.  Also her right eye has pus, and fluid keeps coming out of her eye.  the vet gave me eye drops, and it seems to be improving since I do not see any fluids and pus.  both of the chinnies' bottom feet (close to their legs) are a little bit raw, and I'm putting ointment on it.  the vet said I should give them a soft bedding, but carefresh is not good for them...most of the chin owners recommend aspen bedding, but I'm not sure if it will continue damaging their feet.

one of my concern about ear infection, i use an ointment that says "for dogs only" but the vet says its fine for all animals.  it just says dogs only because it is expensive to test on all other animals.  I did not like the idea of that, and i do not think the vet knows enough about chinchillas... i just wanted to hear from you, see if you'd know?  I use tri-otic ointment, also using the ointment collects all the dirt to their ears... and their furs are covered in ointment.  the only improvement i see in violet is her eyes and the scab on her nose.  but not the feet and the ears on both chinchillas.  i tried looking on the website to see what it might be, but i can't find anything.  I'm going back to the vet this sunday, same time I'm giving them the chinnies' stool to have it examined for parasites.  please let me know asap if this sounds right?  if I'm doing the right thing?

I have pictures but i have no idea how to attach it to this post.
