General Chat / Chinchilla restless
« on: January 04, 2015, 09:52:06 PM »
My chinchilla is restless and she is jumping around and she's really hyper. I am assuming she just has more energy since its night, but is there anything I should do to calm her down? Thanks

I have heard rose hips are good for chinchillas. Does anyone know benefits of rose hips or if they should have them? Thanks

Health / Food warning
« on: December 27, 2014, 10:33:01 PM »
I have done research to find that Kaytee's fiesta party mix for small animal food is somewhat harmful. First of all, chinchillas should stick to a very plain diet. However, the Kaytee fiesta mix contains lots of fattening unnecessary foods. Kaytee fiesta mix also is very low in fiber and can cause digestive issues for any small animal. Yes, animals tend to like the fiesta party mix a lot more than normal pet food, but it is NOT suggested that you try this food for them. If they are not eating, there are plenty of other alternatives.

First, figure out what is causing your animal to not eat. Usually, it is due to stress or trauma, and sometimes fear. If you're animal is around loud noises or other animals, you might want to move them into a quieter space. If this doesn't work, try moving the food bowl into another place in the cage so they notice it. If they still aren't eating, you might need to take them to the vet to check their health.

**NOTE chinchillas usually eat a little bit here and there rather than everything all at once. If your chinchilla doesn't eat right away, don't rush into any assumtions. Just give it time and let your chinchilla have space.

I hope this helped :)

Cages / Cage floor
« on: December 27, 2014, 09:45:02 PM »
For my chinchilla, Moxie, I have a huge cage for her with plenty of space and multiple levels. However the "flooring" in most of it is just bars. On each level there are some platforms, but I have heard the bars are not great for their feet. Is this true? If so, is there some type of flooring of some sort that I can put in there?
Thanks :)

Other Pets / My pets
« on: December 27, 2014, 07:58:12 PM »
In all, I have seven pets. Before I continue let me just make clear that we have the space and care for the animals and none of them are left in small cages or bad care.
I have two dogs, Sam and Mackenzie. Sam is a male golden retriever whose hyper and spunky, even for six. Mackenzie is a female cocker spaniel and she's a 3 year old and loves cuddling. Next we have 3 cats, Riley, misty and Andie. Riley is an outgoing Laid back lazy ball of red fur, and he's not shy at all. Misty, on the other hand, is a bit more shy but as soon as you pet her she warms up. Riley and misty are brother and sister, but they are nothing alike. My other cat, Andie, who was a stray we found in the hills of a town called stuben when we traveled there, which is mostly farmland. She immediately warmed up to  us and we kept her.

Next I have my bunny milkshake who is a black holland lop. And finally my beige 1 year old chin, moxie.

« on: December 27, 2014, 07:03:17 PM »
Hi I'm new here. I currently own a chinchilla named moxie (my username). She's a beige chin just over a year old, and she's cuddly yet she can be feisty and mischievous... rofl
So yeah, I'm new, if someone could give me advice or pointers or whatever that would be great! Thanks :)
