Q & A / Kind of dumb question...
« on: March 08, 2012, 09:37:14 PM »
Ok, I just ordered a BUNCH of stuff from TJs chinchilla supplies (great store! ::banana::) and I just got everything (cept for the cage which should be here soon!). This is my first time having or using a hammock. Jose LOVES it! YAY!!!  :::grins:: Now, my dumb question is this, I know chinchillas can over heat very easily. Will he remove himself from the hammock before he gets to the point of over heating?

Has anyone gotten a hammock or a bed for their chinny before? I am thinking about getting one for Jose cause they just look so comfy. But I wanted to see if anyone else had any experience with them first.  ::shrug::

Is it safe to sprinkle a little baby cornstarch powder on all the bedding in Jose's cage to help eliminate odor?

General Chat / Food

Ok, when we first got Jose, we bought nutriphase (pr something like that) chinchilla food for him. Well, the last time I went to the pet store they were out of that brand, so I bought the Mazuri brand chinchilla pellets. Well I know that I had read on here somewhere that when you change their brand of food, you have to do it slowly, a little at a time. Well, that didn't happen with Jose. I put a little of the new Mazuri food in his bowl and mixed it up with his old food. Well, wouldn't you know it, the smart little booger apparently likes the Mazuri brand food better. He picked out the Mazuri food and ate it and left his old food alone! They are smart little fellers I guess. The reason I knew he was doing that was because the Mazuri food looks a little different than the nutriphase food. So I could tell that the Mazuri pellets were gone and the others one. Every day Jose just amazes me more and more!  ::silly::

Health / Poop anyone?

Can anyone tell me what a normal poop looks like for chinchillas? And what does poop look like that I should be worried about?

Q & A / Quiet squeaks
« on: June 05, 2011, 12:43:04 AM »
We take Jose out to have his playtime in the bathroom. The past few times we have taken him the bathroom to play, he makes these really quiet muffled squeaks while he is playing. Does that mean he is happy?

Has anyone heard of a Lava Ledge before? Is it safe for chinchillas?

Health / Scared Jose?

Can a chinchilla get scared by something or someone and stay scared for a while? If so, how long do they tend to stay scared?

General Chat / Bedding???
« on: May 28, 2011, 11:28:49 AM »
I read in a previous post that I could use pre-printed newspaper paper for bedding in the cage. I was wondering if there are any particulars with that. Any kind of newspaper paper as long as it hasn't been printed on? Also, how small should I tear it up? Will it hurt if they eat it?

Health / Just curious
« on: May 27, 2011, 07:00:58 PM »
Jose is missing a finger. He has been ever since we got him. It's not raw or infected or anything, it's just not there. He won't be still long enough for me to actually look at it and see how much is missing. It doesn't seem to be bothering him or hindering him in any way. Could this have been a birth defect? Has anyone else had to deal with something like this before?

Ok, I was looking at everyones' pictures of their chin babies, which by the way, I couldn't think of any better way to spend my time at work! :2funny: Anyway, I saw in a lot of the pictures, stuffed animals and blankets and the little soft hammock like things. I didn't think that those would be good to use with a chinchilla. Am I wrong? Will the chinchillas not tear them up? Will they not make the chinchilla too hot? I would love to put something soft for Jose to snuggle up on in his cage, is that possible?

Q & A / Messy cage
« on: May 24, 2011, 05:07:55 PM »
Is there something out there that is made to go around the bottom of the cage or something that will keep all poo and bedding from getting kicked out of the cage?
