Health / Soft Foods
« on: April 02, 2009, 05:19:53 PM »
Hi.

My chin was showing the signs of a tooth problem (drooling, lack of appetite, etc), so I took him to an exotic vet. She was very nice and noticed that one of his molars was becoming "sharp" and causing him distress. She filed it down and gave us pain medication to give him. It's been 3 days since we've been to the vet and he really hasn't eaten much (probably afraid of pain).

She suggested we feed him banana baby food through a syringe.

Are there any other types of soft foods/liquids that he could eat?

Thanks,

Dan

Health / Loose Fur
« on: May 10, 2008, 11:52:02 AM »
Hi everyone. I noticed like in April that my Donny has some fur that is loose on his back and its lighter than the rest of his gray fur. I'm wondering if chinchillas are like most animals, in that they shed their winter coats when spring begins? I can just pull out these small bundles of fur without pain to him...seems like shedding. Is this healthy?

General Chat / Me+Donny Bonding
« on: May 09, 2008, 09:21:06 PM »
Tonight me and my chin bonded! or something like that..way after his bath and playtime I opened the cage door to change his food and stroke him, and the little guy just wouldn't leave me alone! I took him out and held him and he seemed perfectly content - he usually never likes to be held. I carried him around the house showing my family and Donny was completely relaxed. Once i thought that was enough I took him back to his cage and he's like nuh-uh I want to be with you. So, I take him for another round around the house and the same thing happens, Donny didn't wanna get off my arm! I put him back in his cage and he just jumped back in my arms. After one final trip around the house I felt that was enough.

I guess my Donny was just thanking me for giving him new furniture and toys!  ;) ;)

Kinda random post, but I was / am very happy!  :::grins::

General Chat / Where you Keep Your Chinchilla
« on: May 06, 2008, 04:53:27 PM »
I'm curious about where all of you devoted chin owners keep your chins? Also, if you could show a picture of your cage (how many chins per cage) and what kind of room you put them in.

I keep my chinchilla in our "music" room, which has 3 windows but hes out of the way of direct sunlight. The cage itself is about 2 1/2 feet from the ground and is a fairly tall cage. It has 1 full bottom floor and a ramp going up to a half floor and another half floor above that. The spot was best for temperature/convenience, and my Donny seems to be doing fine in the conditions.

Also, where do you let your chinchillas run around during their play times? I let mine go in the bathroom, as it is easiest to clean and my only real "chin proof" room.

Get back to me on this! :D

Q & A / 2nd Chinchilla
« on: May 06, 2008, 04:16:29 PM »
Hi everyone! First off, want to say I'm new to the forums...I've been reading the chinchilla tips and such, great info!

So, I have a chinchilla who recently turned a year old and I got him last July, (7/7/07!) He's a standard gray male and I love the guy a lot. However, I'm not always home (never during the day) and sometimes I don't have more than 30 minutes to take him out. I was thinking getting a second chinchilla would help keep him company and keep him happy and active. What I want to know is, how will I know that he would pair well with a future male chinchilla? Can it be a younger chinchilla, or near the same age?

Hi again, eagerly waiting for replies!
