Hehe, like I said, I wouldn't mind traveling, it's my family that would have to go with me. :) Father is disabled, and mother has to take care of him, so travel more than perhaps an hour or two driving distance is almost impossible.

THe only problem is, I'm located in Memphis, at the opposite side of those rescues. ( I have already looked at them ,heheh...) And, most rescues do not ship. { Completely understandable. }

Thanks for the Help, though!

Hello!

I'm looking towards the holiday season acquiring a guinea pig (Preferribly), or another chinchilla.

I was just wondering if any of you knew a Cavery, or  Chinchilla breeder near Memphis, TN.  I can't travel far due to disabilities in the family.

Haha, Chin-Chin has stolen my glasses before, too - luckily, I'm not blind without them and I promptly got them back.

Actually, I purchased a black and gold bracelet today at a yardsale, and the little chin actually got it off of my wrist as I was petting him.

I tell you, someone should train them as pickpockets, haha!

I voted More than $2.50 - Maybe if you have extra time when you work on them, it'd be a cool idea  if you did them in like .. all sorts of different colour chins.

{ I know I'd adore a calendar with a Homo-Beige, since that's my boy! }

Let me know when they go on sale, though, i definitely want one.

Hehe.. let's see if I can list the pets + Their like of Chin-Chin...

My Border Collie + Chin-Chin : She gets jealous, but she enjoys sitting on my bed and just watching him. When he's out and about in his ball, she's terrified that he'll run her over, haha.

My eldest Sheltie + Chin-Chin : They adore eachother. And since I have no idea where the hair dryer is,they don't get to be out without the plastic-barrier of the ball between them, since she really likes licking things she loves.  I have a feeling I could let her in his play room at play time if it weren't for her licking all the time.

My youngest Sheltie + Chin-Chin : Indifferent.  He's terrified of Chin-Chin and my mouse when they're in their balls.

My mouse, Nelix + Chin-Chin: Indifferent, I think.  I had them rolling around in their little ball things in the kitchen  for some fun on Monday, and I couldn't tell if Chin-Chin was purposely trying to run Nelix over, or if it was just a "Hey, get off the road!" type thing... Kidding. Theydon't really care about eachother.

So, I suppose I have all ends. :) One that's jealous, and would much rather me be playing with her, one that would spend every waking moment with the chin if she could, and two that could care less.

Hm, I guess his little laughing sound is actually him wanting to be with me  :-\ Kind of makes me feel bad for going to school! Oh well, I'll have to take him out for extra time then ;D.

Love the website , JoAnn, thanks for linking it!

General Chat / Chinchilla Noises : What do yours make?
« on: September 06, 2007, 05:03:54 AM »
Okay, so either I'm going a little crazy, or Chin-Chin's making some noises.

I've heard most of the time chins are usually quiet critters, unless you try and pick them up.  But I swear, chinchin's hopping around and making almost.. I can't tell if they're crying, or laughing noises.

It sounds like a really soft, as if a child is doing it - "hoohoohoohoo." I thought it might've been AnimalPlanet on my TV, but it's not-> It's him.

So, does anyone know what this is? Or do your chins make funny noises, too?

JoAnn had alot of awesome responses, and I figure I'll just throw some at you as well.  Just some experiances from a 16 Year old with A chin :)

The most important thing to remember is just like dogs, and people, Chins are not all alike.

Personally, My Chin- I could probably give him 1 Tbsp of Mazuri feed each week. He only eats it during the time that I'm asleep and he manages to eat all of his hay.  { I go to bed at 10:30pm and wake up at 3am. By no means do you have to do this lol!}

I always keep his bowl full, since it's elevated, I've never found him to urinate or poo in it.  His hay, I keep in this.. rotating Hay ball . He loves it, and it keeps him from, again, urinating and pooing on it.   What I did, with my cage- is I have a slide-out pan. It's very easy, just pull out, dump the bedding, and refill. Since they don't  sleep on the bedding, and they don't stink, I have no need to use vinegar. { I do disinfect the pan after I dump out the bedding though, just to get rid of germs.}

However, My male mouse is a different story. It's almost a neccessity to use vinegar on his cage, and disinfectant, AND deodorizer. He's a little stinker! { I have  One mouse, One Chin, and a Border collie in my room, and he makes enough stink for the chin, dog, and myself, yeesh! }

I would also reccomend, when you get one, that you disinfect your room with some lysol, and if at all possible, keep your chin in a different room from your hamsters for about a month. { Unless they pass, then -  still disinfect your room with lysol or something, just to get rodent germs out of there.} Since it is possible to transfer disease from rodent to rodent.

 Also, Read and research all you can. I'll be honest, my parents never heard of a chinchilla, so I read and reread everything until I could recite word for word almost everything about them. { And, I presented them with the option of Rat or Chinchilla, and well.. they preferred the chins ;) }

Also, if you don't want to do vinegar, I believe they have lysol Wipes that could work? Maybe someone who has used them as substitute could tell you.

Also, regarding activity time with your Chinchilla -

When I do it during the week, I usually take him out at about 6PM for about 45 minutes romp-around-the-bathroom time. If I can't do that, I have an 11.5" Ball that I let him roll around in til his heart's content. Mine has learned that he has a special bag { Pet carrier } That when I put it to his cage door, it's time to be handled and/or let out for a romp around and/or he gets to go somewhere with me out in public.  { AKA, the petstore for toys, or the Vet to visit his former owner.}
UNfortunately, they MAY keep you up at night if they're in your room. Mine enjoys making as much ruckus as possible from about 10:30 until midnight.  He also enjoys his hello's in the morning, which is usually a pet and treat session  at about 5:45 or 6:15AM.  Then he goes to sleep. :)

Hope something from here helped!

Haha I've found one time that he's remorseless ->

If I have the raisin box, but there's not one in his mouth right that instant. He tends to bite my thumbnail fairly hard as if saying " Get a move on, That raisin is NOT in my mouth, and I demand it be so!"

Greedy chins! ::silly::

General Chat / Re: Chins That Are From pet Stores
« on: September 05, 2007, 05:19:36 AM »
Well, my first chin { Merlin } I had recieved from petSmart myself.. I had to return him due to he had a raging case of earmites and mange. I would have treated him myself, but I have a border collie who is extremely supsceptable to Mange due to genetics.  {The vet said it was possible for her to get it if she was near the Chin alot.}

A new environment could stress out a chinny from what I've heard- it's also why most breeders do not like to ship by plane, lots of environment changes and dangers to the chin.

I would suggest first holding a raisin out and make sure he gets it from your hand, the more you do it, the more he'll see you as not a threat, then you can try placing the raisin higher and higher so he gets used to your arm. I know my Chin-Chin  likes using my arm as a perch now lol!

Also, I do believe they -can- sleep with their eyes open like rats. Chin-Chin often sleeps on the highest point of the cage aswell where there is no shade at all.  Mine didn't use his nest either until the second week of having him. Now he uses it all the time, and occasionally still sleeps on his perch.

General Chat / Guilty Chins?
« on: September 01, 2007, 08:19:08 AM »
Right, so, I've been pretty sick lately, and ChinChin's such a doll that he knew I was sick, and allows me extra cuddle time when he comes out. (Usually all I get is about a minute, now I get two haha)

He really loves to use my arm and hand as a perch, and he always gives me light, little nibbles{ Just grazes his teeth over my skin, not really like. biting nibbles.} , and Today he accidently got a chunk of skin between his teeth and nipped.  I calmly said "Ow!"  and he scampered to his ..what I say, "I'm sorry" corner, and tucked his head under the wheel.

He does that whenever he accidently bites.

So, anyone else have a chin who either knows when they're sick, or one that is guilty whenever they know they did something that hurt their friend?

sand does the same thing. have you ever noticed how soft your skin gets after a few days at the beach? your feet especially. I'm not sure about dust, but sand exfoliates your skin. I have gotten dust on my hands and it sparkles and felt smoother. The closest thing to the chin dust is different powders they sell- which does the same thing.

I never thought about until you said it tho  ::)

WEll, being in Western TN, I've never even -seen- a beach! lol But, sounds pretty cool. I mainly decided to try it since ChinChin's bath dust smells like cucumber melon XD

Okay, so TNChinChin back again.

I decided to try something, out of a touch of curiosity.

Chinchilla dust, if it makes their fur so soft, why not our skin >D?

Someone should seriously market it ;P I put it on my arm to test it, rubbed it down, and a bit later, bam.. super soft/silky skin. Anyone else ever tried it?

I think so! In fact, I just gave ChinChin a treat.. funniest thing-

He dropped it, so I bent down to look for it with his cage door open, all of the sudden, he jumps and sits on top of my head.  ::silly:: I'm just glad he didn't have to go to the bathroom!

And a random update: He likes watching Animal planet.
