Q & A / Wood
« on: February 24, 2009, 10:21:47 AM »
I know this is going to be repetitive,  but I need a reminder.  My Mom is going to make wooden shelves for the chinny cage, as they chew the plastic ones.  She has a lot of different kinds on hand, but wants to know if there is any they definitely CANNOT have.

Please help!  She's leaving to come visit in a couple days and we would like to know before then.

;)  I'm still iffy on giving it away.  Kira has fallen in love with the flying saucer, but M'noke still does't know what to do.  I think Kira's smarter than me!   rofl  M'noke's whiskers have grown back beautifully!   :::grins::

Thanks for your help everyone.   ::silly::

General Chat / Re: How do I protect my walls?
« on: November 25, 2008, 06:22:15 PM »
Hm, don't think the cage guards would work.  I have two levels, and the seond one is just a wire bottom.  Although most of it is covered to protect their feet, it's the uncovered parts that Kira finds, she even moves stuff to pee on the bars.   :-[  Moving the cage is a good idea.  I did that this week.  During play time they have conspired to move the curtain closer to the cage so they can eat it later.  They are way too smart.  Oddly, smarter than me, because I never thought of tacking down the sides  ???  Thanks!

General Chat / How do I protect my walls?
« on: November 24, 2008, 12:47:19 AM »
My girls pee out the back of their cage.  I have two litter boxes for them, which they use, and were trianed in in the old cage, but since we got the new two leveled cage, they seem to pee on the wall anyway.  I was using a clear shower curtain to protect it, but they've started eating it  :(  Any suggestions of what I can put there that would be chinnie safe?

Q & A / Re: Chinchilla Toys??
« on: November 24, 2008, 12:42:31 AM »
Like Joanne, I go to the lumber store and get untreated pine.  It's floor moulding, and we discovered that if we get the odd shorter sizes, they can only charge for a full foot, so we often get lots of footage for free.  I have a saw, but if I'm not in the mood, I can just step on it and snap it in half to fit in the cage, and it seems to be fine for them.  They love these as they like chewing on things they can hold down with their feet, as opposed to smaller things that roll away.

Once every couple months I give them a medium sized box (like the size of a pop can box) to play with.  They go nuts for it and chew it up in a couple days.  ONce they pee on it, I take it out, but they crawl in it, roll in it, sleep in it and jump on it. they don't constantly have one, because if it's in for too long their poops get smaller, so I take it out after two days or so.

The most important thing I've noticed is to give them differnet things all the time.  They even get tired of the pine sticks if I don't rotate them with other chew things, or take them out for a couple weeks so they seem "new".  They need variety and new things all the time, so instead of overwhelming them with lots of toys at once, I give them a new one every week.  this is more exciting for them and keeps them entertained the best.

To be honest, their favourite toy these days seems to be their bedding  ::shrug::

they have never chewed on a lava stone, but it's important to give it a try.

Well, I don't know how much help I can be, as I bought my girls together.  But I do know it will probably take you more than two weeks to introduce them.  Chinchillas move slow, and they will call the shots.  There is also a possiblity that they will never get along, and I have heard that males don't like to live together too much (it's the most difficult combination I think.  And, even if you get a female, you still have that possiblity.  When adopting a second chinchilla, you always have to accept that there is a chance they will have to be in separate cages.

One way of introducing that I"ve read is to let them bath in each other's dust to get used to scent, etc.  But you are probably moving too soon for them.

Hope this helps.  I think others who have more experince will be of more help, but if they continue to fight, you will probably be out of luck.

Wanted to give you all an update!  I ordered a new wheel, but in the mean time put the flying saucer wheel in the cage.  The new wheel hasn't arrived, and guess what?  Kira figured out the flying saucer wheel today!  I couldn't believe it, she just hopped up and started running, after months of having it in the cage!  I'm so proud of her!   :::grins::  M'noke's interested now, it won't be long that they both have it figured out!

What am I going to do with the new wheel now?

Thanks JOanne, that's good to know.  I did order another wheel (thanks Brazilnut) but being slightly different than what they used, they may have trouble with that.  I"ll see how the flying saucer goes.  They've had it in before for months with no result and M'noke gets sad without it.  she is shy and doesn't always want to come out and play, so without her wheel she gets no exercise  :(

Thanks, I will give them a try.  I tried the last website posted, but they are waiting on "parts".  So, still no wheel for my girls.  The old one is in their play area and M'noke sits in it and looks sad....

I have the flying saucer wheel in the cage right now, adn yesterday we spotted Kira on it and swinging back and forth.  is this a good sign?  I'm kinda thinking the wheel might be too small (noticed this while she was on it).  Is there a minimum size for flying saucers too?

Thanks for posting that website.  They will ship to Canada, so I'm going to try the wheel.  They just aren't into the flying saucer.  I tried the treat on a string thing, and it's still on the string... It's a raisin too!

I didn't know that chins can have loofa, is that true?  The website below has them as chewing treats.  My girls would probably love that.

I need a new wheel quickly, they are getting ansy.  The old wheel is in their play area still, and M'noke keeps crawling in it and looking sad  :'(

Thanks JOanne.  I'll give this a try tonight and see if they'll catch on.  I was just putting treats ON it before, and they'd hop up and eat them, then get off!

It's definitely from the wheel.  It's so used (she loves it!) that it's crooked and the side that is frayed is dangerously close to where it could get caught!  Kira runs in the other direction if at all.

Thanks for the lead, I called all the petsmarts in the city, and none had them.  I even looked on the website :(  When I looked for a wheel last year I couldnt' find one anywhere!  I doubt I'll find something as fancy if that's the case.

My girls have had poop on them before.  Kira has pooped on M'noke's head!  I think it was an accident, but yesterday she had some sprays of pee on her head, so I'm not so sure now... LOL  Their fur is so thick anything could get in there.

I've been trying to buy this wheel for a week, and it's been out of stock.  Anyone know anywhere else I can order it from?
