Q & A / Introducing three chins
« on: January 18, 2017, 01:49:32 AM »
Hi everyone

I'd like some advice on introducing three chins.

I have one at the moment. She is 14. Her sister passed away about 5 years ago so she has been on her own since then.

I've now got the opportunity to adopt two more (1 year and 3 years - both female). They are living together.

Do you think it will be harder to introduce them to my current chin because 2 of them already have a bond? The last thing I want to do is distress my chin... but she is so relaxed and friendly that I think she would enjoy the company of other chins.

Any views/advice would be great. I'm torn!

I have read up about introducing chinchillas and already have another cage so that's not a problem. My concern is that it will be difficult to introduce them when 2 already have a bond.

Thanks
Chloe

Health / Fur loss and flaky skin
« on: October 05, 2016, 01:52:27 PM »
Hi everyone
My chin has been losing fur on her back for a few weeks now. She doesn't lose much -  just a few clumps stick up from her back, abit like fur slip but not as severe (I really don't think it's fur slip as she is totally comfortable with being handled). It's almost as though she's catching it on her cage somewhere and it's being pulled out. Again I don't think that's the case. I haven't been pulling the loose fur out as it doesn't seem to be bothering her and I don't want to hurt her. There isn't any bald patches where the fur loss is happening. When I blow on her fur in the effected area, it's difficult to see her actual skin as he fur is so dense, but I have noticed a few dandruff type flakes. She is fine in herself and isn't biting the area. I also give her a dust bath every couple of days.
Has anyone come across anything like this before?
Thank you
Chloe

Health / Skin tags??
« on: May 08, 2016, 01:12:51 PM »
Hi everyone

I noticed that my chin has two (that I can find) of what look like skin tags on the left hand side of her body.

I've searched the internet about skin tags on chinchillas and can only find limited information.

I was wondering if anyone has experienced this kind of thing with their chins and knows what it could be? I've posted a photo below.

They are only a few mm in size (so very small). In fact it's really hard to find them under all of her fur! I only noticed them because I thought she was scratching (which I now don't think she is), so checked her skin out.

Could they be something she's had forever and I've never noticed before? Or perhaps they have developed with age as she's 14 now.

Any help/advice would be really appreciated.

Thanks
Chloe
