ok, she only seemed protective of her food lol, actually why i'm trying to push the cages is because her's right now is more geared toward newborns it is all wooden except the top, and our ac is completly out so i'm afraid of them overheating, where the males cage is the one him and her originally shared, its open all the way around with a plastic bottom & i reinforced the bars with 1/2 inch hardware wire, i did put her in the babies in there alone at one time, and one of them climbed 2 feet up to an opening (the only spot on the entire cage that wasn't covered, it was less than a 2 inch section but it found it) he was bonded with another who died 2 years ago during a severe summer storm that made our house into an oven, within a few hours the temps went to above 90 we got them out but he died a few days later and i'm certain that is the reason why. I can take that cage outside to the shade if necessary but i can't move what she is in, its to big and heavy & to be honest i cannot afford another cage at this time

Bella delivered 4 kits 3 weeks ago today, i died at birth, i let dad in to visit about a week later, supervised with an open cage and two people to intervene if necessary (which it was lol)  the babies played with him & he was in no way aggressive toward them, anyway he is very depressed now, I've been told it is ok to put them back as a family after a few weeks, that he will not hurt them, I think i'm more concerned with back-breeding, in others experiences, how can i tell if she is no longer in heat? I'm just really concerned with his well being, he is a cuddled and even cages close together seems to make it worse for him

Health / feeding hay..oats?
« on: January 25, 2011, 10:13:40 PM »
 ::silly::
I'm looking forward to posting some pics soon...i want to share my little family with everyone. I'm always on the lookout for stuff i may not have known..
so here's a few more questions, I have been feeding my little ones the same food, and occasional treat..but after reading online i decided to give them a few rolled
oats instead of the store bought treats..they were a hit..but only a tiny bit at a time..don't want them to get sick..does anyone else let them eat oats? and have you had any trouble with that?, also another thing i am wondering is about hay, i have given the store bought a few times, we used it for our
guinea pig also..now they have gotten a taste of the "real stuff" its actually very clean hay that we keep in small amounts for our rabbits, no chemicals or pesticides, completly dry, free of any bugs or "yucky" stuff.
has anyone done this or does everyone just go with the store bought ?  what other stuff do you feed your chins for treats ? any comments are very welcome :)

Q & A / In the same room together?...& tv questions
« on: October 28, 2010, 09:40:54 PM »
So we had our spoiled little boy in our bedroom but he made such a ruckus at night that i figured he was super bored...so a few nights ago i brought him downstairs, tv was turned down low (icarly was on) anyway he jumped up to his perch and just sat there lol....i kept one side of cage completly covered so he could retreat into his "cave" if he really needed to. anyway i got up the next morning and there he was watching hannah montana...lol..seriously in a good mood, so i brought him to the same place for 2 more nights..is that bad for him? i kind thought maybe he would enjoy the "company" and maybe learn more than just how to throw things lol. i usually move his cage to a closed bedroom during the day now. and.he doesnt seem to mind being moved around..but i also have a male and female that i keep together upstairs, they aren't very playful at all...maybe it would help them socially n not be so bored..im wondering if i brought them down also would it be ok for them all to be in the same room together..place the two cages about 20 ft or so away from each other, upstairs both cages where placed against the wall next to the door..so pretty much a 2 inch seperation and just around the corner was their neighbor..they made noises back and forth but never anything aggressive, the boys have previously been caged together but had to seperate when they started fighting...i made a mistake of moving  her cage right next to theirs for about a month..i just wonder if they would all be ok..the boys are both super sweet and give me kisses and show off all the time..she is skitish..always has been that way but seems since they have been together that she follows his lead a little more with coming to me. anyway..anyone have advice...is the tv gonna ruin my poor babies..lol and is room sharing at that distance gonna cause me any problems..?

Q & A / Re: Fairly new owner...still curious questions
« on: April 20, 2010, 06:43:07 AM »
i'm thinking now that the close cages really may have been a problem..the more dominate male has a scab on his left side, the hair is a little matted slightly moist , so i've been clearing it away and making sure its dry , doesn't seem to be sores, the skin is pink with no bleeding or oozing underneath, he is eating, drinking and playing just  fine..i do not have access to an exotic pets vet at all, so i am thinking he has either fought with the other male (there was an issue with a water bottle they decided not to share anymore and they were fighting about around a week ago over it..but mostly just chasing each other away and barking, they rarely argue about anything..but this was after getting the female. the other thing i was thinking was that maybe he had gotten wet from the water dripping at one point?? maybe it had gotten in that area and when the hair matted it caused it. But i am going to get a new cage and seperate them tomorrow...i hate to think of them being alone because they sleep snuggled up next to each other and definatly have fun playing together.
Our little girl is doing great, she's adjusting very well, but she seems content to just play with her own toys and not have to share.

Q & A / Re: Fairly new owner...still curious questions

Right now one of our boys weighs close to 15 ounces and the other is just shy of 14 ounces, the little girl is only around 9.5 ounces.
Never really thought about having them close to each other..two boys fighting over the only female they will probably ever see...i thought at first i was completly wrong about the two boys....the newest boy who's name is "Nilla" seemed to treat the first "Chilla" well...um...like it was a female..but i soon found out it was a dominating behavior..like in the groups to show who's the leader..i was totally freaking out..i thought maybe he was confused haha.
But now i just call them "my boys" and they roughhouse and play like a couple of kids. i have thought back and forth about breeding and acutally right now have bred an giant english angora rabbit and am awaiting babies in the next 7 days :). I just worry about babies going to homes that won't respect the fact that they aren't hamsters or gerbils. i know with the rabbits that you usually cannot have males together at all so i am prepared if the boys need to have their own space, but what about females, i have have female rabbits that do great together..any advice on that one? These are my babies..among the many others..human and not lol..and i adore them..i never imagined the little personalities that they would show..they are definatly a unique animal. One of my older babies had his picture taken so much..we'd always say "cheese" when we took the pic and now we hold up the camera and he'll come to his ledge and perch  just like we had him do to take the pictures in the beginning :)

Q & A / Fairly new owner...still curious questions
« on: April 18, 2010, 05:45:19 PM »
We got our first baby Chilla in january, and the second Nilla about 2 weeks later (chilla seemed lonely). both are boys and were kept next to each other in seperate cages for a few days and let them have playtime and now they share the same home,   and they are best buds.. :) Well a few weeks ago my husband surprised me with a little girl..much much smaller than either of the boys when we brought them home, Willow is very affectionate but seems timid, her cage is also place next to the boys i've even let them play together COMPLETLY  supervised a few times and they were fine, no plans to breed so they are kept seperate. What i am wondering is if there is any way to estimate the age with the size of the chinchilla's? i got them from a petsmart pet store, and they had no info at all about their age, i keep very close track of how much they eat and how they behave and also of their weight and length..i can't seem to find anywhere that might show me a range..and that is my main concern at the moment is just having an idea of how old they may be so i can make sure their growth and development are on track...can anyone help? ::silly::
