General Chat / Re: Need help having problems with my mounted wheel
« on: September 21, 2014, 07:48:27 AM »
Here's the one I got for about $45CD. When I was looking at other members cage pics there was one with the same wheel mounted to there cage. The 15inch metal ones I can't find other then  online orders which in refusing do to (credit cards are evil)

Urgh. That was the first wheel I got for Popsicle. (or the same thing made from same factory in China but different Brandname retailer)

It is CRAP. Hard to mount properly, makes a TON of noise despite being claimed as silent, falls apart quickly, and made of plastic so chinchillas eat it and get sick.

Make your own Ikea wheel... cheapest option, and if made right it's best quality too, IMHO.

Health / Re: Rescue chin!
« on: September 18, 2014, 02:45:01 AM »
 :'(

At first he was grunting a lot as soon as I came anywhere near him but that has stopped, I've started letting him out a lot (his cage is rather small compared to the other one we have, just trouble getting it transported over as it is rather big). But he's still quite jumpy. He doesn't seem to be popcorning (I think that's the right phrase) a lot.

My question is what can I do to make the little guy happy? I've got a flying saucer wheel on the way and will hopefully be able to get him a lot of treats and the proper food he needs tomorrow.

Sounds like you've made quite a lot of progress in a short amount of time, actually!
Every chin has some personality quirks and stuff... sounds to me like the two of you are quite compatible with each other, I'd say just keep on doing what you're doing... and just use a little "instinct" for minor minor daily adjustments...

At the end of the day, forummers can give every piece of advice by the book... and it might turn out that a new owner has beginners luck and just clicks well with his chin. For popsicle and me, EVERYONE says not to chase you chin around cause of their prey instincts trigerring, but my little guy LOVES playing tag with me and hide and seek, and even takes turns chasing me sometimes... .... mind you, Gray Rodent and gang are very knowledgeable and give good advice. Just saying that, for instance, if you already let your chin out to play on the first day you got him, and he is happy and playful, then keep letting him out and ignore the 5 day/ 2 week waiting period. However, if you let a chin out on the 1st day you get him, and he acts weird, then you will know that it is because you should observe the waiting period in that case!!! (again, Popsicle was atypical, and wanted out of cage by day 2, and was playing tag with me by the end of the 1st week)

Health / Are peas and tomato juice dangerous for chins?
« on: September 18, 2014, 02:33:32 AM »
I know it's not a good idea to feed that to them, it was an accident.

I was having my dinner, a bowl of baby peas in tomato juice, and I had let Popsicle out to play... then I got distracted by something, and Popsicle for once was very quiet... later I noticed red footprints all over my papers near my half eaten dinner... oh dear... and Popsicle hardly touched his pellets last night and today... oh man... he must have pigged out on that stuff... I know for a fact there's more calories in there than in Hay or Hay Pellets, but how bad is it? I don't know how much he ate either... Well, he seems perfectly normal except for the fact that he didn't eat his pellets...

I hardly have free time, but I'll try to make a vet appointment tomorrow I guess? ... though, by tomorrow, everything would have already gone through his digestive system already, so if no problems come up by tomorrow it's likely that I had a narrow escape?

Health / Re: chinchilla soft stool again
« on: September 17, 2014, 01:38:56 AM »
Recommend you take some samples of the stool and send it to the vet.

This is also one of the reasons not to get lots of other pets in addition to chinchillas... chins are semi-fragile creatures, and if money is tight, it's probably a good idea to budget in a cash reserve for bringing them to the vet, rather than spending the money on enlarging your menagerie.
There's no point having 5 different pets and you can't afford the time or money to take care of them, much better keep it at 2 pets but you take very good care of them.

OK, here's several things I seem to have learnt:

1. Your chin bonds with you faster. Even tons of interaction, he gets used to you pretty fast cause you're sharing living space.

2. Your chin becomes less territorial. You become more of a "family member who lives in the same burrow" rather than "this is my cage, and outside is wilderness.
Popsicle understands that outside the cage is "MY area", and that he's my guest... so, after he gets tired from playing, he goes back to "his area" on his own, he just goes inside his cage when he's done. ... he also doesn't come out of his cage unless I "invite" him, even if I open the cage door and back off, he will wait for me to insert my hand, then hop on it. (but then he immediately bolts off to play hide and seek)

3. Your chin gets less lonely and less bored! ... not so important if you keep a pair or family of chins, but pretty important when it's just 1 guy by himself.

4. Your chin will start thinking of you as "fun" and "interesting"... because you are his source of stimulation and entertainment. This is nice, as people with kids will tell you, being the "fun" parent instead of the "strict, boring" parent feels good!

General Chat / Daddy... help me!!! :( ... lol...
« on: September 16, 2014, 09:49:05 AM »
Egads popsicle is so cute! I had him on my shoulder, gave him a dried strawberry treat... he grabbed it, and did his usual flying leap to his landing base mattress... then he stopped. Looked left. looked right. looked around some more. Then looked at me looking very sad. His eyes were telling me "daddy, I dropped my strawberry!!! Where is my strawberry???" ... helped him find it, and he was so happy. ROFL.

Q & A / Re: Is Talcum Powder safe for Chins?
« on: August 29, 2014, 07:38:46 AM »
ooh... I won't do it then.

I assumed (wrongly) that talcum powder is safe for babies so it should be safe for anything. ... THANKS FOR THE SAVE!!!

Q & A / Re: How much hay should my chin be eating?
« on: August 29, 2014, 07:34:09 AM »
I think that I got popsicle too used to pellets, and he knows that they are tastier and have more nutritional content than hay, so he only eats it for variety.
Or so it seems anyway.

...

Is there a problem if a chin subsists on ONLY pellets? ... I wouldn't do it, but I'm just curious whether that would have a detrimental effect.

popsicle seems to waste about 2/3 of his hay... AARGH.

Just changed brand of hay in the hopes of improvement.

Q & A / Is Talcum Powder safe for Chins?
« on: August 27, 2014, 10:48:26 AM »
I was planning an April Fool prank on Popsicle where I switch his dust bath with talcum powder in his bath house... is this safe? ... will I just get an angry and upset chinchilla?

General Chat / Re: Chins scared in the new house!
« on: August 23, 2014, 12:59:35 PM »
I agree with grayrodent, and would like to add one more possibility:

smell.

Animals have better sense of smell than humans and rely on it a lot more. Unpleasant/ unfamiliar smells can cause huge amounts of discomfort.

It's a new house... did you PAINT it or put new wallpaper etc? Even for me, I HATE having my room painted cause I just can't adjust to the smell of a newly painted room, can't sleep.

Cages / Re: Chinchilla Cage Feng Shui

chins seem to embrace their rodent instincts if you supply tunnels, mazes, and other similiar things.

Also, be prepared that if you supply your chin with wooden furniture/ furnishings/ houses/ etc, they will eat it/ destroy it.

wow.
makes me even more head over heels with popsicle.
For some reason, he might be a genius among chins or something, when I bit too hard I said "OUCH" pulled my hand away and stopped playing with him. ... he learnt how to adjust to just light nibbles within 1-2 weeks.

General Chat / Re: on a scale of 1 to 10, how spoilt is Popsicle?
« on: August 17, 2014, 05:52:40 AM »
It's AWESOME.

... Well, Popsicle protests, and insists that you've calibrated it wrongly. But what does he know, his brain is the size of a peanut.

"SQUEEEK!!!! A Very Very Large Peanut!!!"

... I stand corrected, his brain is the size of a very large peanut.

"SQUEEK."
