General Chat / Re: Basement
« on: March 18, 2013, 09:24:23 AM »
I don't know how folks using fleece keep up. I guess one or two cages is not too bad, but I have 17 cages, can't imagine having to keep that much fleece clean. I use pine shavings with the chins. Unlike many small critters mine only pee on it they don't sleep on it, and prefer up high in the cage as opposed to low or on the floor.
My hamster buries in his so he gets boxo.

Mine talk back to me all the time. I just talk and they peep back. I have videos but finding them in my albums isn't easy. I'll have a look though  ;)

Health / Re: Chinchilla eating less hay than pellets
« on: March 18, 2013, 08:28:37 AM »
Cut back his pellets so he has to eat the hay, and cut out the treats. Or at least cut way back. If he was hungry he'd eat the hay. If you offer him more of the stuff he likes he will logically eat less hay.

And I have never seen a malo case chew fur is that Common ?

Try moving things around so she doesn't have her favourite place to pee and sit. ;)

Yes it is affection or at least their way of accepting you as part of the herd.

it takes time, keep trying them.Watch for biting, and fur flying.Don't let them hurt each other. They will work out the dominance/pecking order.
I have just put two together that have been fighting and playing for months. ;)

Q & A / Re: Please help me with new chin owner trouble!
« on: August 24, 2012, 07:36:31 AM »
This is the fun in owning the little darlings.
I use a timer as I have so many, and put treats on their shelves while they are out. They are smart and soon learned when the timer went off their treats were ready and they go back to their cages.
This can take from weeks to months of doing it though. No rush they live a long time.
Mine won't stop long enough when out for their runs for a scratch, that's an in the cage treat. ;)

Health / Re: scared chinchilla might have had a seizure?
« on: August 15, 2012, 07:55:09 PM »
A head injury or even a jolt can cause a seizure.
My very first kit I dropped and caused him to be 75% blind and he has seizures when he gets excited. My little 12 pound Maltese/poodle mix loves him and my chin is fine with him. Each dog and each chin will be different.
When Waverly has a seizure his body can just go limp for a few seconds or with a bad one he'll straighten out stiff, with his 4 legs reaching his straight up to his face. He's 14 now  ::kiss99::
I had another have heat seizures and stoke just from being out for a run. He was a big boy, but he just stared off and went limp. He didn't make it. ::cry222:::

It can take a couple of treatments to clear up especially if the chin is still stressed. 2 weeks is not very long.
A bit of burnt toast never hurts.

Screw or bolt a tuna fish can to the cage, works in most mine  ;)
And only put a couple of table spoons of pellets in it. They thinks money grows on trees ya know. ;D
