General Breeder Chat / Poor Baby :(

Our female finally had a little one, but it was still born and was about 3 weeks too early. It was her first and she only had one. We think it was just too big for her first time. It happened between 4:00am and 7:00am. Of course I was up till 4am that morning. It was so heart breaking, and the little one was a female with the most wonderful white mosaic coloring. She stood there waiting for us hoping we could help, and we tried for 2 hours to warm her up but just couldn't get her to come back.

It's been a few weeks and I still cannot get that little cute face out of my head. I’m not sure I ever will

General Chat / New Color?

We originally thought we had bought a pink white, but the more time has gone on she has developed violet tendencies on her tail, back side and around her ears. We took her into the breeders and they think she might be a pink white violet. Has anyone heard of this?

You can see the ears on this picture, I will have to take more later.

I’m not sure why I have been thinking about this, but I’m starting to think that chinchillas are somehow linked to the human evolution ring. I've been thinking a lot about their little hands and how similar those are to human hands. Has anyone else ever thought about this?

Health / My Chinchilla Cookie Recipe

My chinchillas absolutely loved these so I thought I would share it with all the chin lovers in the world :-)

I put some food and some animax in a bowl (1/4 cup of each) in about 3/4 cup of filtered water. I let that sit until all the water had been sucked up into the food. Took about 1 hour. I took a food processor, threw about 12 rose hips a handful of alfalfa in and about 1/2 cup of oats. I pulverized it, then added the food slurry to the food processor, I then added more oats until it was the right (oatmeal cookie) consistency. Then about 1/4 teaspoon of molasses.

Then I took a baking sheet with some parchment paper and spread out the mix 1/4" high then I baked at 250 for 20 minutes, just until it becomes hard. Cool for 12 hours and cut and serve :-). They loved it.

Health / Vibrating

So I noticed while squeaks was on my shoulder he was vibrating a lot, at an interval of 2 or 3 seconds. I think it's some kind of communication method, but I don't really understand. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Health / Cranberry Juice?

I heard someone say that cranberry juice for pregnant chins is a good thing or better towards the end of the pregnancy? Is this verifiable? I would probably take fresh cranberries and make the juice from scratch.

Cages / Cage

Because of the lack time I have, although I might have some this summer, I am starting to contemplate buying a new cage. has anyone had any luck with best chinchilla cages? This cage looks interesting, although I am still thinking about building one, I just need access to a metal brake and shear

Q & A / SCALE

Okay, since the last scale I got ended up being a tiny one. Is there any scales you guys might recomend?

General Chat / It's official our chinchilla is pregnant :-)

Well it's official our pink white is finally pregnant, she just pushed out the wax plug this morning before our eyes! I guess 110 days from today is finally the day! BABIES!

Cages / Cage Question

I've been watching my two chins playing for a while and they seem to love to bounce off of walls a lot. I've been thinking about building them a new cage or a habitat at some point but I haven't come up with an idea that I absolutely love.

When I see pictures of wild chinchillas I see them playing on rocks and living in tunnels. One question I have is do you think a larger horizontal cage would be better than a taller vertical one. We have been thinking in our next house to have a chinchilla room. I've been wondering if maybe one of those plexiglass cages they have at petco would be better than a wire cage. Thoughts? Basically, if you had a million dollars to spoil a chinchilla how would you build them a cage.
