Signs of a Pregnant Chin
« on: December 03, 2006, 11:52:16 PM »

Hi Katie:

I am new here.  I just signed myself and my stepdaughter up.  We are the proud parents of an albino ebony and a mosaic, who I believe is pregnant.  I had 8 chinchillas in the past.  The Mom liked to have babies....but I don't remember the signs of pregnancy.  If you know any, could you please fill me in?  She is getting fatter, but that's not always a good indication.

Thanks
Rachel

::silly::
 1) Weight gain
 2) sleeping on her side
 3) fur around the teats falling away
 4) longer, pinker teats
 5) amount of food eaten should increase
 6) often a mood change
 7) amount of water increases just before delivery
 8) flatten out on the bottom of the cage with some rapid breathing
 9) doing what looks like stretching exercises
10) cleaning her self more than normal
11) discharge
Most of these will apply most of the time, but not always.

Ok I have to ask,
what's an albino ebony?
Got a picture?

My gals pee so much more during pregnancy, I keep checking for leaks in the water bottle. ;D
Great list Jo Ann.
Oh and my nasty gals get sweet, and like to be cuddled. Most just get sweeter.

I'm like Debbie ... love to see a picture of an albino ebony.  Or an albino chinchilla ... very, very rare.

Meadowbrook Chinchillas have a trio they call "OREO" due to the fact there was a pink white/ebony carrier and two dark ebonies born in the same litter.  It's at:  http://www.chin-chillas.com/gallery_page_11.htm

Hi Rachel,
How's it going? Is she still pregnant?
I have a gal here now that I am unsure of the dates, and I just found/ remembered another one, sign.
When my gals get real close their droppings get real small. Not much room I guess as the kits drop and get ready for birth.
I always give Mom a scattered raisin just to ease things along. ;)

Odds are, most of the time an ebony and a pink white will give you a light ebony ... a white mosaic and an ebony can do the same OR give you a white mosaic/eb with black markings OR either combination can also give you a standard gray/eb carrier that has what looks like a "dirty" belly.

This is where we really have to be careful!  When you add an ebony, all of the generations after, will have the possibility of showing up with "dirty" bellies when it should have a white belly.

If we are wanting the white mosaic with black markings, we can get this by using a black velvet and still keep the pure white bellies for future generations.   ::)

When you purchase a white/ebony, keep in mind, there is no guarantee what it will produce ... other than a very good possibility of kits with dirty bellies for generations to come.

Get basically the same look/markings by using a black velvet instead!

Thanks Jo Ann, and my Christmas pic is Precious, a preemie born with only half of one ear lobe.I too think she looks hot in her get up. After all I went through to get a few shots ::) I had to use some for Christmas cards.

The white ebonies seem to be quite popular in the pet scene, funny how a term can make a difference, if you can get a better look with a bv.
So much to learn ::nod::
Oh the Dad is a mosaic, though he has no ears at all now, he too had part of one lobe at birth, but mother chewed it off. Doing her best to fix a problem.

Are black velvets supposed to have a white belly or salt and pepper appearance?
