Chinchilla survival kit

Hello everyone,

I don't if anyone else has done anything similar but I'm looking for ideas on putting together a chinchilla survival kit to go along with out people survival kit.

According to a government Pre-9/11 report the three biggest threats the US faced were another terrorist attack in manhattan, a direct hit hurricane to New Orleans and a magnitude 7 or high earthquake striking in Southern CA... we live in Southern California and I feel its better to be save then sorry.

So for Maggie some of the things I've included so far include a week supply of food in a sealed airtight canister, aqua blox, oats and dried papaya, a feeding syringe, a pet carrier, emergency cold packs, saline, neosporine, cotton balls, gauze, a cardboard collar, a mini bottle of peach schnaps, and an eye dropper. I plan to switch the parisable items out like food every three months.

My husbands mom is our pet sitter and back up plan in case something happens to us so I'm trying to prepare a packet for her including my favorite books.

I'm trying to not get too carried away as all of this is just a precautionary measure but I do understand Maggie's survival could depend on our planning in advance. I plan on asking my vet if he has any suggestions but does anyone else have something similar or a disaster plan for their chins?

Hi tinabeana,

You & I think alike!  I did a little blip about this same type of thing in Chinchilla Community Magazine.  I think it was in the last issue and called something like, Emergency/Hurricane Evacuation Kits for Chinchillas. 
To find it and pull it up you can do a search on this site for the article.  Let me try to find it and I'll post the link to it if I can.  It's been a LOOOONG day today!  If I can't find it Jamie & Jo Ann will come to my rescue they know the article!

  You got me on that one, too.  I've always understood peaches were like poison for a chinchilla.

I was told in the event of serious, possibly mortal injury, if i couldn't immediately get Maggie to the vet that 5-10 cc of flavored schnapps (all the schnapps I looked at had no actual fruit in it) would be effective pain relief.

There's a question mark next to this one, so I still had to ask my vet. I honestly don't know what I would do if she were seriously injuried and I couldn't take her to the vet. Thankfully the vet is literally 4 blocks away and I do remember them saying they had a disaster plan. I'll talk to him about it next week.

Oh my Jamie, your a grand laugh, and I'd bet a few shots would do the trick.


On the kit note, I always keep in mind what some one say on the old forum about getting numours chins out in a hurry. Pillow cases, I know I don't have enough carriers to get all mine out if the house caught fire, and keep a few old pillow cases in the chins room just incase. I could just tie them off and I could get vseveral in the one carrier if I was stuck.

The pillow cases are a good idea. I only have 2 chins but if there was a fire I am sure they would be scared and running like crazy. A pillow case to scoop them up and run is a great idea.

In your chin survival kit ...
 Hay,(they can live on hay and water, if need be).
 Neosporin or a good triple anti-biotic, (not only kills bacteria, but keeps damaged tissue/wounds/sores soft and less painful)
 Small bottle of iodine (Iodine solution in saline or sterile water to the color of weak tea, used with a syringe can clean out open wounds and prevent infection (check my article on Luv 'N Chins II at: http://www.geocities.com/jobernstein1949/ under Nursing and Damage Control ... this procedure can be used on any open wound)
Natural Tears (eye wash)
Nutri Cal
Ground Hay(food processor or blender)
Vitamin C
Sterile Gauze in Sealed packages
Roll of Gauze & Popsicle sticks for broken bones or injured arm, leg, paw or tail.
dried papaya and rose hips for treats, vitamins and to calm your little one.
paper towels they absorb moisture faster and better than cloth
hand towels perfect size to rap your chin and keep it warm and/or treat an injury.
small glass jar with a lidto mix medication, food , etc for your chin.[/u]
alcohol for cleaning utensils, syringe, etc.
