Cage Help - Need New Cage
« on: July 22, 2012, 05:11:53 PM »

So I have 2 chins and the FN My first super deluxe cage (I think thats the name); its 24 x 24 x 42 inches. Ever since buying a wooden hay box and noticing it slump (bc the cage can't hold it) I've been looking around here and there. Well now one of the wires broke (no emergency or anything). So I've been looking at the following:

http://www.petstreetmall.com/Critter-Nation-Cage/8515/3521/details.html

My budget is 200 bucks. I was really hoping this cage would last me just a few more months until I could graduate and find full time work :( Any help/advice would be appreciated! I'm not specific on a brand or anything so all help is welcome :)

Unless the bars are somehow different on the new cage I don't think it's going to help much.
I made this diagram as a suggestion on what you might do with your existing cage. You can find stainless steel L channel and bar at a hardware store. To build this you need a drill, a hacksaw, and a file to make sure the sawed edges are smooth. It is a suggestion and I don't know if it can cause a problem or not. Take care to set it up so there are no pinch points or places where chinchilla feet can get caught if you go this route.

You can cut everything to the sizes you need to support the heavy accessories or even bolt the accessories to the new structure.

Well I think the cage is just cheaply made, Super Pet products aren't the best. One of the wires snapped, its pretty weak. I can def point that out to my boyfriend tho since I'm not very handy!

I thought you said it was an FN cage. I guess I misunderstood. I know there are FN cage users here. Hopefully one will comment soon.

If you can eventually afford it, cages from quality cage company are amazing.

It is a FN cage, one from them and superpet. Their Midwest Cage line is FN plus Critter Nation, hope that helps clear up the confusion :)

@ glafond: I saw those cages but MAN are they so expensive! I totally plan on one of those later on but I just can't afford 300-400 bucks for one :(

I have looked at this one and I really love it, except that every level is mesh. Any ideas for covering it up or advice on it?

There is another one just like it called the liberta explorer but its trays(floors) are plastic. Which obviously you would want to cap the edges or put all new floors in. If you do find the xtrail cage beware that it comes with the worst instructions ever. I built mine basically looking at pitcures of it on websites. Also, in the uk it seems most retailers will only get one shipment a month of them. I had to pay for mine before they ordered it and it took a good month to arrive. It is quite big as well. All in all i would buy it again if i had to. Once its together its very sturdy and the chinchilla seems way happier which is the most important thing.
