HELP. POSSIB
« on: May 17, 2012, 07:52:58 PM »

Nickers hasn't pooped all day... The levels are clean but my family claims that the bedding is covered in poop. I don't notice any difference in amount from yesterday. I wanted to feed him a raisin to help with digestion, but he's already had two raspberries today and I don't want to give him diahhorea. Someone please help!

Not pooping is abnormal for chins. You should consider a vet visit if you don't see any changes after a few hours.
Give the fruit some time to work and watch for signs of bloating. One thing you can do is rub his belly gently where his guts are to help. Keep in mind chins intestines are much slower than in humans and they must constantly be in motion to keep the right balance of flora. If that balance is lost it is difficult to restore it and may require special dietary supplements and syringe feeding to get it back online especially because sick chins tend to go anorexic.

Another thing you want to do is try to find out what is causing this.

Have you noticed any changes in water intake?
Have there been any recent changes in your chin's diet?
Have there been any signs of tooth problems?

Hope this helps.

Thanks, but everything is normal except there is much less poop. Some days the cage is full of poop but others it has almost none. He has never had diahhorea or any other health issues, and he went to the vet two months ago. She said he's healthy. I'm just worried because he pooped not as much. However, there was a small amount of poop in the cage.

What are you feeding it and how many treats does it get each day?
Are there any major changes in your pet's schedule especially regarding room lighting, noise, or anything that effects its sleep?
Are there changes in its daily water consumption?
Also was this occurring before you took it to the vet?
On days when there is less poo does it also appear harder, smaller, or drier than on other days?

I'm not sure what's going on but I suspect there is an explanation and I still don't think this is normal. Almost no poop in a day is a bad sign.

Nothing at all is different, not his behavior or anything else. Just less poop.

I don't know maybe you just have a weird chinchilla. I would love to see others comment on this.

Do you let him out to play? You'll quickly see if he's pooping or not. Also, getting out to play seems to stimulate poohing. It's happened that once ot twice, Buddy has gotten out to play and didn't poop at all for the first ten minutes or so but then he did all the poops in the world! I hope your boy's okay.

yes it's true they poop more when they are on "play time"it's really funny but if his not pooping difinitely something changed you should see a vet if when is out he doesn't poop too  cause pooping is like what they do more  if there's no poop something is wrong.

When did you notice these cycles starting? How long do they typically last? Are they getting worse?
When you took your chin to the vet was he aware of this? If not you might want to discuss it your vet and set up another visit if this happens again anytime soon.

He seems to be absolutely fine now, although as a precaution, can someone give me the name of a safe wet tail treatment?

The prevailing wisdom around here is to feed a tablespoon's worth of toast that is burned (almost black) but only if the stool is consistently loose and wet. It is dangerous to do this unless it is absolutely needed.

I was looking up more information and it appears constipation is a common problem with chins especially if they are not getting enough daily fiber. What is his diet like? This would include treats or lack thereof. Water consumption is also important. Some chins will back off of their water if it has an off taste or quality to it. How often do you replace the water? I would do it once every three days but others may recommend once a day especially if your pet has a habit of back-washing. The vacuum action in the bottle can pull entire pellets up in there and cause contamination.

Just some thoughts.
