If there was ever a true lady chinchilla it was Willow.
A beautiful white mosaic I purchased from a local fur farm in 2000. He said she was about 5 at the time, so she was at least 16 years old.
I should have known when she didn't chew her stump there was more too it.
She had lost some fur under her neck a good 3 years ago. Looked more from rubbing, as she had a few rolls and was starting to calm down.she spent most of her time just cuddled in her hut.
She seemed to have developed an infection in her neck{ fluid build up under the skin, very visible with the lack of fur} and chest{wheezing} I'm just not sure what came first.
At 16 years old we felt it was best for her to euthanize.
After all these years and many deaths it still doesn't get any easier.
She was the mother to my chins with no ears, and even though I soon realized she wouldn't be a good breeder she was an awesome pet.
So calm and content, and graceful lady.
RIP my friend, we had 11 great years together. cry

I am so sorry to hear about Willow, and you are right, it never gets any easier. Willow had a wonderful loving home for 11 years, and I hope that gives you some comfort. It takes a lot of strength to do what you did for her, and I know how painful it can be. She is at the Rainbow Bridge now, and will be waiting for you. so sad

Deb,
I'm so sorry to hear about your Willow. It's hard to lose chins, period, but I've found there's a special deep sadness in losing our older ones. They're part of our everyday life for so long, and have such wonderful personalities...
I have 4 chins left now and they're all in the 12-17 age range... The edema and wheezing you describe sounds like congestive heart failure, perhaps? I had an older chin once who developed a large swelling under her chin- the vet thought it was a ruptured salivary gland. We left it untreated(due to her age,12) and she lived comfortably for a year after. The autopsy revealed a sizeable tumor growing right next to her heart. I don't recall her wheezing, but the swelling in her throat area was pretty substantial...
I'm sure that Cody is looking out for your Willow, and that they're in good hands.
