suddenly aggressive after new additions? help!
« on: March 30, 2010, 07:03:13 PM »

Alright, so my boyfriend and I have had our two boys Liv (standard) and Indy (hetero beige) for about a year now, Indy a little less than that. They got along from the start and have been living together since. Indy is a little weirdo for sure but Liv is a mellow chinnie so they balance each other out, i suppose.

On Saturday, we picked up our two new additions a little pink white and a light ebony from Mt. Zion Chins who are both about 2 1/2 months and they are both great. Obviously they are in a seperate room during quarantine, which happens to be the spare bedroom next to my bedroom where Liv and Indy have their cage. The two pairs have not seen each other or been in any contact. However, the little pink-white guy is quite a barker! He's nervous, of course, and will sometimes sit in his fleece tunnel and bark for about 5 minutes straight. Plus he's loud, so of course Liv and Indy can hear him. Liv doesn't seem to be bothered by it, but I noticed initially that Indy will make a loud squeak like he's trying to communicate with them, they have yet to respond. They do squeak to each other though (the little boys) and he may be able to hear that.

Now two nights ago, I woke up quite a few times to chasing going on in the big boys' cage. I always hear jumping and such but this was not fun. I eventually realized that Indy was chasing Liv around, causing him to fur slip a few times and run into corners or hideouts to get away. He did not physically injure him from what I can see and Liv seems to be okay when i took him out for playtime. Obviously i seperated them, but do you think there's any correspondence with the new arrivals and this sudden aggression from Indy? I know sometimes cagemates can basically attack for no reason, but I can't help but think that it has something to do with Indy knowing there's other chins in the house? I could just be crazy. I would appreciate any help though! Thanks guys.

nope steve both are males. The breeder told me and i triple checked myself to make sure there's no mistakes this time around! haha but yes they're only 2 1/2 months but they both have a nice gap between their penis and anus. so we're in the clear there!

They might hear others, but it shouldn't cause a problem.
One way to check it out is play chin sounds and see how they react. Can they hear your PC from their room?
I have had chins turn on each other, but usually females. ::)
But if Indy feels there's a baby in trouble he could want to help, or he could want to fight with the new one. Maybe he doesn't like what he saying about his new home... :D We just never know what they are talking about.
I would say he just had a bad night, or a little tiff with Liv.
How are they now?

Usually when i play sounds on my computer they get excited and perk up. But i think Indy might have just been upset cause he couldn't find where these mysterious new chins were! because during the day he's absolutely fine and last night he was fine with Liv. They both played well and didn't wake up angry mommy  ::nod:: So i'll just keep an eye and see how they are. Deb did you see the pictures of the new little ones?! Check my thread "new baby coming!"  :2funny:

::silly::  Is there a place you could put the new cage/chins that would not be in the same room, but they would still be visible from to Liv & Indy?  Maybe if the big boys knew the little ones were OK it would not upset him.  Just a suggestion to try.   :)

Not really Joann, as my big boys are in the back corner of my bedroom. They do seem alot better though and the quarantine period is over soon! so they will be able to see each other  :::grins::
