Bark! Bark! Bark!.....Bark! Bark! Bark!.....Bark! Bark! Bark!

My chinchilla, Lemmiwinks, was barking at 1 a.m. this morning. She had food, so she couldn't have been hungry. I have two cats but they sleep with me, so it couldn't have been them (they get along with the chins anyway). How do I stop her? She was barking three or four times, stopped for a few seconds, and started up again. She repeated this six or seven times before finally giving it (and me) a rest....HELP!

Hippo,
I agree that she probably heard, saw, or smelled something that got her excited. Or she was just lonely and missed you. I had a chinchilla that would call for me at night because he learned that I would come to check on him if he made that noise! LOL
Steven, OMG you and I could share some stories about haunted houses. We should get together sometime since we are only 2 1/2 hours away. I think we would have a lot of fun chatting!

Lemmiwinks is about a year or less old. She does this about every other week for one night. I don't know if she's in heat or not, but she does have a male companion living in the same cage.

Now that's a good one. She's not lonely then.
Maybe he's not impressing her LOL
Try a teddy bear, but wait till she barks and give it to her. At least then you'll train her to ask for it, and she won't feel like she is barking for nothing.
It is their time to be up, so maybe she's bored?
That's agood one Steve, wish I could have seen it. How come they never haunt those who wouldn't mind, like me.

I'm just concerned she'll wake the neighbors up and get me into trouble...and by the way, she does like the male, for reasons I won't describe...this is a G-rated site, after all!

Is she really loud enough to wake the neighbors? If you are sure they won't get over heated try covering their cage with a light sheet at night. Perhaps that will keep her calm. Its worth a shot.

cadillactaste: Just make sure the stuffed animal doesn't have plastic eyes or bean filled. [So I was warned]

Wow, she must be really loud if the neighbors would be disturbed. If mine were that loud, yes it would be annoying but I have Godzilla & Rodan living upstairs so they could use some competition!
I am going to try the stuffed animal thing when all the ice here in NC melts and I can get out again. Hoping it might help Juno when the babies are removed. Jeez, I left Denver and it followed me!

Cheech sleep barks...
I used to go and check on her but I'd always startle her when I stroked her. And then I would give her treats to calm her down. She has never associated barking with treats so I don't even think she knows she does it. It'
very
rare that any of the otehrs do it. I woner what she's dreaming about?

mine do the same thing when in their room alone. it's not a real "bark" like if someone is mad. but like a softer type of bark if that makes sense. i think they are jsut talking to each other, or maybe one wants something.. i don't know... but i like it when they talk...
