What's causing these eye infections?
« on: March 25, 2009, 07:08:10 AM »

Snakes eye infection healed perfectly. I agreed with the vet that it was a foreign body in the eye and therefore it was not contagious and kept her with her mum and sister. Like I said it's healed perfectly and then about two weeks later Cheech, the mum, gets an infection in both eyes! It's not bad at all and I'm hoping I caught it and am treating it early enough to stop it getting any worse but I'm stumped as to what's causing them.

I haven't changed any cleaning products, or any deodorant sprays. I can't think of any other conditions that might have been changed. And why would it affect one and no one else and then a month later affect another? Has anyone got any experience of this?

::silly::   I've never heard of "snake eye infection", please, elaborate a bit more on that subject.   ::think::   You have my curiosity up.     ::nod::

What was the vet treating the eye with?

I believe Snake is the name of the chinchilla.
There are so man things that cause eye problems, sinus or other infections, foreign bodies in the eye, dental issues, I even had one girl that had allergies to shavings.

Sorry for the confusion, Snake is the name of my chinchilla. ::) I caused the receptionist at the vets to run and hide because she actually thought I had a snake... you'd think she'd wouldn't be scared being a receptionist at the vets...

They're being treated with 'Fucithalmic' which is an antibiotic eye drop. We were 99% certain Snake's eye infection was due to a foreign body and not contagious. None of the others caught it. It was only after she was fully recovered that Cheech got the infection weeks after.

A little update: I found Cheech with her head and eyes in the area where they all pee. Basically they pee from one of the top levels and she was underneath that with her head in the corner, I don't know why. I'm going to clean the area and secure some wood there so they can't pee in it. I think perhaps the two eye infections are unrelated, but still any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
