Excited Boy Chin
« on: June 12, 2008, 10:43:31 AM »

Stuart seems a bit excited lately...to the point he's trying to mate with Spike. (Also a boy...) Not sure if its because he can smell the girls in the other cage or what. Does anyone else have this happen???

It is not mating behavior, but dominance behavior you are seeing.  One chin mounting another is a way to express dominance.  So Stuart is letting Spike know he is in charge.  It is very possible that the presence of the females is causing this behavior to be more pronounced in your boys.  I would watch them carefully to make sure they aren't fighting or showing signs of aggression towards each other.  Competing males have been known to fight viciously, even to the death.

Well its a bit odd though because Stu normally acts like Spike is his Mommy, cuddling with him and Spike normally is very protective of Stu, just like he is with the girls..So no there hasnt been any aggressive behaivor between them at all....only Stu trying to mount Spike

If they are still young it might be a dominance thing, but if they are well bonded it could be the girls.  You have to be very careful when you have boys together caged near girls. On three separate occasions I've had older boys who lived together all of there lives begin to fight when a girl nearby went into heat. The last time one almost killed the other! After that I separated all of my male pairs.  You might want to move the boys to a new room of the house just in case.
