Hay
« on: April 28, 2008, 02:54:13 PM »

Hi all!  I just accidently bought Alfalfa Hay, instead of Timothy Hay.  Can I use this every day, as a substitute for Timothy Hay?  Or should I get the two and mix them, or what?

Thank you!

Pellets are made up of mostly alfalfa hay, so it's best to have timothy hay as well.  I think mixing the two types together is a good idea.

Leslie's right...you will need a balance of alfalfa and timothy in your chin's diet. You might want to double check your pellets just to make sure they're alfalfa based. I use Mizuri pellets (alfalfa based) and give Timothy hay with alfalfa cubes mixed in, so mixing the two types of hay should be fine! My chin really seems to enjoy the variation. 8)

I feed my chin Mazuri pellets and he has a constant supply of Timothy hay. On sundays [once a week] I give him Alfalfa instead, the breeder I got him from said that alfalfa is higher in fat and should only be given sparingly.

Hi Beth,
Its true that a mixture is best, but it is ok to feel the alfalfa by itself daily until you can get to the store to buy more timothy.
