Stinky chin!
« on: May 20, 2008, 04:16:21 PM »

Hi all!  Hope you and your little ones are well!

I've noticed the past week or so that Lulu smells like pee.  I don't know how to stop it.  I change her cage daily (remove all wet spots and poo), scrub her cage weekly, and give her daily dust baths.  Any ideas/suggestions?  Please help.

Thank you! ;)

Look where she's peeing. Is she peeing on a ledge and then sitting in it? IN her box, on her hay or anything like that which would then transfer on to her. Chinchillas don't, or shouldn't smell, although their cages can. Also take a peek at her backside. Make sure it's clean, or in other words, make sure she's cleaning herself properly. :)

I would buy some Desenex Athlete's Foot Powder.  Put a heaping tablespoon in her dust bath.  It will help if she has a fungus and it also smells good.

You could also buy some unscented baby wipes and wipe the fur around her bottom if she has pee stains.

She pees in the bottom of her cage.  In the corner, and all over the middle.  I remove the wet spots every evening when I let her out to play.  I suppose she could be running through it at some point?  I'll try to remove the spots in the morning, too.  Thanks.

She shouldn't be sitting in it, but just watch her. Mine pee through the top wire mesh floor and onto their wooden ledges and then sit on the ledges. I'm constantly cleaning them, but Cheech has a habit of falling of ledges while asleep so I have to keep the mesh floor on the top level to stop her falling too far... Silly chin.
