When I moved out to the boonies in 1998 I had rabbits in out side cages, with a run into the shed.
Well the local dogs tore open the cage twice and all my rabbits got free.
I went to my friends Ma & Pa pet shop looking for something I could keep inside, in cages, bigger than a GP.
He had just gotten in a baby chin.
After researching the net and 4 trips to see him I brought a carrier with me and bought him.
I was hooked. ::kiss99::
I sence shipped some in and currently have 25 pets, some in breeding.
I sell maybe 8-12 kits per year, and still keep a scattered one...... new colors, females, or just the odd one way to cute to part with. ::nod::

I have seen some awesome chinchilla tatt's and have one in mind for myself should I ever have that kind of money to spare. ;)

I first saw a chinchilla at a zoo about 20 years ago.  They were letting people pet it and I fell in love!  I wanted one ever since, but I didn't know where to get one.  After it was easier to find breeders, I was living in a mobile home without central air, so I knew it would not be good for a chinchilla.  I was finally able to get one 5 years after we moved into our house.  Now I have 4.  The ironic thing is, my relatives are giving my dad a hard time, even though he doesn't live with us, (saying "you finally have your chinchilla") because turns out, when he was a kid, he wanted to breed them for their FUR!!!!  Luckily he never did.

Now that's pretty cool, I would never have thought you'd find them in a zoo.
Then we don't have a zoo as such. Just a couple of nature parks with mostly local wild life.
