Thanks for the ideas Jo Ann and Jenova.   As you wrote, saying "no" is like laying down a double-dog-dare!  Maybe if I tell her No when she chews the real toys!   :)    I'm going to start trying those ideas next time she's out to play.

Wondering about all the cardboard in the room.  Ari is DINING on the cardboard boxes.  She rips layers off and consumes them and then goes back for more.  There is no cardboard in her cage, so she can only do it during play time...but does anyone have an idea of how much is too much to eat?

thanks in advance for your comments.  I have learned so much here!

If she is one of those I wouldn't let her consume much. Put her cage houses and boxes on the floor for when out.

Mine just shred it. Makes great shavings :D soaks up loads.
Funny some shred in strips while others mulch. ;D
I have this one guy who takes the top out of his hung tube so he can see out. Likes his sun roof.
Most chew the bottom out of their tubes in their cages.
They all have wood boxes, but some will still sleep in the cardboard tubes.

We tried blowing in her face, lemon peel, hot sauce )didn't phaze her!), and high pitched noises.  No effect.  Its time to put up a fence.  That girl is obstinate!  Someone said something about a 4-month old chinchilla being the equivalent of "terrible twos" and they were so right!

Those are good suggestions. Maybe I'll use those.  Well, except for the hot sauce :)

Chong squeezes in between the two cages and runs up and down in there like a spy scaling a building.

I just made my gallery.. finally, so I can actually show you a picture.

That picture is so funny!!  ::silly::

He's still doing it! And when they're both out he crawls around behind the cages, between them and the wall. It's his hiding place from Cheech because she's too fat to fit. ;D

I was wondering about those little pens. Is it around Ari's cage or do you set him in it to play? Roo gets behind the TV, me & my boyfriend have only had him alittle over a week but we don*t try to get him out for fear of scaring him. we covered up all the wires behind the tv & on the battery backup so he wont get hurt. We just wait for him to come out. Is this a bad idea? we kinda stressed him out day before yesterday trying to get him. Poor guy.

We love our pen.  It has a bunch of panels so it can be set up in any shape, hooked together to make a closed pen, or strung across the room to keep Ari from her latest passion - eating the wall.  One little caveat...she's been practicing jumping and one of these days she's going to make it right over the top of the fence.  You still have to keep a close eye on your chinchilla.

I love my playpen as well.  I have the Midwest 11-panel playpen that is 36" tall.  It works beautifully.  While I am sure my babies can jump out, which is why I don't do unsupervised playtime, very few of them ever do.

the pen I tried to get was too short so I am shopping around for a better one. They seem to make it easier to gather the chins back up and you don't have to worry about keeping and I on them the entire time you are cleaning the cages or whatever it may be. I cant wait to get a good one with extentions too :)

I bought a cheap pack-n-play baby playpen from a yard sale and that is what I put my chinchillas in to run.  It was especially good for the little babies still with mom to go while I cleaned cages.  Adults could easily jump out of it if they weren't watched, but It would be really easy to cover the top of one for safer playing.   :)

We have a playpen as well and one of our chins learned to jump out one day....and he's never gone back.  As soon as he gets in there he starts eying up the top.  We take a fitted bed sheet and stretch it over the playpen and it solves the problem completely.
